Research review - Statins and CoQ10 (Ubiquinone) synthesis

This scientific study shows how some cholesterol medications can block the production of a particular nutrient known as Coenzyme Q10 (aka CoQ10) in the body. As CoQ10 is necessary for energy production by cells of our body, it has been suggested that this may explain the fatigue, aches and pains that are a common side effect of cholesterol medication. HMA Co-A reductase inhibitors or statins inhibit one of the key steps in coenzyme Q10 synthesis.

These drugs have been associated with a reduction in serum and muscle tissue coenzyme Q10 levels and may play a role in statin-induced myopathy."
